Merge tags
Insert merge tags into your pages, assets, documents and emails, and find every tag and where it works.
A merge tag is a placeholder that Supporter Club replaces with real details when it shows a page or sends an email, such as the club's name or a supporter's first name. A merge tag is written between *| and |*, for example *|CLUB_NAME|*.
Insert a merge tag from the list
In the page, asset and document builders, the designer and the email builder:
- Select a piece of text, so its settings show in the Settings or Editor panel.
- Select the text field to open the text editor, headed with the name of the part you selected.
- Put the cursor where the tag should go.
- Open Merge tag and choose a tag. Type in the list to search it by name, tag or description. Each entry shows its name, the tag itself and a description.
- Select Save changes.
The list is grouped under headings such as Club, Membership, Contact, Organisation and Donation. It only offers the tags that work in the design you are editing. Some names appear twice in a group, for example a member's details and the details of the ambassador who referred them; the tag under each name tells them apart.
Type a merge tag
You can also type a tag. Typing is the only way to add one where there is no Merge tag list:
- the Title and Description in a page's Page settings (see Pages)
- an email's subject and preheader (see Emails)
- link addresses and image alt text in a design
Capital letters don't matter: *|club_name|* works the same as *|CLUB_NAME|*.
A tag that doesn't work in that place, or is misspelled, shows nothing. Check your text in the preview before you publish.
Change how a tag's text looks
Add one of these after the tag's name, after a colon:
:UPPERCASEturns the text into capitals:*|CLUB_NAME:UPPERCASE|*:LOWERCASEturns it into small letters.:TITLECASEstarts each word with a capital.:POSSESSIVEturns a name into its possessive form, for example Sam's.
Which tags work where
Each kind of design offers its own set of tags. The prefix at the start of a tag says whose details it shows.
| Where | Tags you can use |
|---|---|
| Club home page, and every document, including the Donation receipt | CLUB_ and ORGANISATION_ tags |
| Ambassador story page | CLUB_, ORGANISATION_, MEMBERSHIP_ and MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_ tags for the ambassador whose page it is, and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_ and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_ tags |
| Supporter join page | CLUB_, ORGANISATION_, and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_ and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_ tags for the ambassador whose join page it is |
| Membership welcome page | CLUB_, ORGANISATION_, MEMBERSHIP_ and MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_ tags for the new supporter, and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_ and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_ tags for the ambassador who referred them |
| Assets (Generic membership asset) | CLUB_, ORGANISATION_, MEMBERSHIP_ and MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_ tags for the member the asset is made for, and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_ and REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_ tags for the ambassador who referred them |
| Emails: the email design, subject and preheader | All the email tags below |
So a document, including the donation receipt, can't show donation details through merge tags.
Wherever REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_ tags work on the story page, the welcome page and assets, you can type AMBASSADOR_ instead, for example *|AMBASSADOR_CONTACT_FIRST_NAME|*. The list shows only the REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_ form.
Tags in emails
Emails offer the most tags, because an email can be about a club, a person, a donation and a membership, and is sent to a recipient:
CLUB_,CONTACT_,DONATION_andMEMBERSHIP_: the club, person, donation and membership the email is about. Which of these an email has depends on what started it; see Workflows.DONATION_CLUB_,DONATION_CONTACT_andDONATION_MEMBERSHIP_: the club, donor and membership of that donation.MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_: the member of that membership.MEMBERSHIP_REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_andMEMBERSHIP_REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_: the ambassador who referred that member.DONATION_MEMBERSHIP_REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_andDONATION_MEMBERSHIP_REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_do the same for the donation's membership.RECIPIENT_CONTACT_: the person receiving this copy of the email.RECIPIENT_CLUB_is the club they receive it through,RECIPIENT_MEMBERSHIP_andRECIPIENT_MEMBERSHIP_CONTACT_are their membership of that club, andRECIPIENT_MEMBERSHIP_REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_is the ambassador who referred them.ORGANISATION_: your organisation.
In emails, AMBASSADOR_ works in place of REFERRING_MEMBERSHIP_ in the same way, for example *|MEMBERSHIP_AMBASSADOR_CONTACT_FIRST_NAME|*.
To build a tag, put the prefix in front of a tag name from the lists below. For example, RECIPIENT_CONTACT_ with FIRST_NAME gives *|RECIPIENT_CONTACT_FIRST_NAME|*. Use the Merge tag list to check a tag exists before you type it.
Every merge tag
The tables give each tag's name. Write it between *| and |*: for example, CLUB_NAME is written *|CLUB_NAME|*.
Club
The club's tags start with CLUB_. In emails, the same names also follow DONATION_CLUB_ and RECIPIENT_CLUB_.

- Until the first goal is reached, and when there are no goals,
CLUB_PREVIOUS_TARGET_AMOUNTandCLUB_PREVIOUS_TARGET_SUPPORTER_COUNTshow 0, written as an amount of money (for example "£0"), and their date tags show "(None)". - If there is an odd number of goals of one kind (amount or supporter count), the same happens once every goal of that kind is reached: the previous goal shows 0 and its date shows "(None)", instead of showing the largest goal.
With no goals set, the other goal amount, count and date tags show "(None)", and the percentage tags show "0%". See Goals and matched donations.

Membership options appear on the join page, and in the Donation examples section when it uses the Dynamic layout, which shows one tile for each of the club's membership options.
Inside a membership option, only these tags work. CLUB_ and ORGANISATION_ tags show nothing there.
