Tipping
Turn tipping on for your organisation, set the tip options donors are offered, and change them or turn them off for a club.
A tip is an optional amount a donor adds on top of their donation, to fund Supporter Club. It is not part of the donation and is not money the club raised.
Donors are offered a tip only when tipping is on for both your organisation and the club. Tipping is off for an organisation until you turn it on. It is on for each new club, so once you turn it on for the organisation, every club offers it unless you turn it off for that club.
How tip options work
You set a Threshold and two sets of three options:
- When the donation is below the threshold, the donor is offered three fixed amounts.
- When the donation is at or above the threshold, the donor is offered three percentages of the donation.
In each set, one option is pre-selected for the donor.
The starting options are:
| Setting | Starting value |
|---|---|
| Threshold | 10 |
| Fixed tip amounts (below threshold) | 1, 2 and 3, with 2 pre-selected |
| Percentage tips (at or above threshold) | 15%, 12% and 10%, with 12% pre-selected |
The threshold and the fixed amounts are plain amounts. The form shows them with your organisation's default currency code, or the club's currency code on a club's own options, but they are not converted. A donor giving in another currency is compared with the same threshold and offered the same fixed amounts in their own currency. For example, with the starting options, a donor giving 8 EUR is offered tips of 1, 2 or 3 EUR.
Percentage tips are worked out on the donation amount. For a donation in Cambodian riel (KHR), a percentage tip is rounded to a whole riel.
Set tipping for your organisation
- Select Settings in the sidebar, then the Payments tab.
- On the Tipping panel, select Edit.
- Choose Don't enable tipping or Enable tipping.
- If you chose Enable tipping, fill in the fields:
- Threshold: "Below this donation amount tips are offered as fixed amounts; at or above it, as percentages."
- Under Fixed tip amounts (below threshold): Value 1, Value 2, Value 3, and Pre-selected value.
- Under Percentage tips (at or above threshold): Value 1, Value 2, Value 3 (each a percentage), and Pre-selected value.
- Select Save changes.
Every value must be filled in and must be 0 or more. Percentages must be whole numbers. If a value is missing or invalid, the panel shows an error and nothing is saved.
When tipping is on, the panel says "Tipping is enabled. Clubs can override or disable these options." and shows your options. When it is off, it says "Tipping is disabled for the organisation."
Change tipping for a club
- Open the club, select Settings, then the Payments tab.
- On the Tipping panel, select Edit.
- Choose Don't enable tipping for this club or Enable tipping for this club.
- Choose Use the organisation's tip options or Override tip options for this club. If you override, fill in the same fields as for the organisation. They are shown with the club's currency code.
- Select Save changes.
The club's Tipping panel then says one of:
- "This club uses the organisation's tip options."
- "This club overrides the organisation's tip options." followed by the club's options.
- "Tipping is disabled for this club."
If tipping is off for your organisation, the panel also shows a note: "Tipping is turned off for the organisation, so it is not shown to donors regardless of this club's setting."
A club that uses the organisation's options picks up any later change you make to them.
Where a tip goes
The donor pays the donation and the tip together, as one payment. The donation's Total amount includes the tip. On a recurring donation, the tip is charged again with every payment, together with the donation. See Donation statuses.
What happens to the tip depends on the payment provider:
- Stripe: the tip goes towards the processing fee first. Your organisation receives the donation less any part of the processing fee the tip doesn't cover. What is left of the tip goes to Supporter Club. If there is no tip, the whole fee comes out of the donation.
- Simulated payments: the figures are worked out the same way as for Stripe, but no real money moves.
- PayWay and Payfast: the whole payment, donation and tip, is paid into your organisation's own account. The tip is not your organisation's money. It is owed to Supporter Club.
