How supporters pay
What a supporter sees when they pay after joining a club, for each payment provider, and what happens to the donation.
When a supporter joins a club and chooses to give, Supporter Club records their donation and sends them to a payment page. Which page they see depends on the payment provider that takes the donation. This page shows each one, so you know what your supporters see and what can stop a payment.
For the join form itself, see Referrals and how supporters join.
Which provider takes the donation
- If the club is not published, every donation goes to your organisation's simulated provider. The supporter sees the Payment Simulation page, and nobody is charged.
- If the club is published, the donation's currency decides the provider, through your payment routes. See Currencies and routes.
Where the supporter is sent
When the supporter submits the join form, the donation is recorded with the status Pending and they go straight to the payment page.
If they come back later through a link to their membership while it is still waiting for payment, they are sent to the payment page for their most recent Pending donation. If there isn't one, they go back to the ambassador's page.
On the way to a Stripe, PayWay or Payfast payment page, Supporter Club checks the donation's status:
- Pending: the supporter goes to the payment page.
- Succeeded: they have already paid, so they go to the welcome page.
- Any other status: they go back to the ambassador's page.
A simulated donation opens the Payment Simulation page only while it is Pending. Otherwise the supporter sees a "Not authorised" page.
After a successful payment, the supporter lands on the club's welcome page. If they cancel at the payment service, they go back to the ambassador's page.
The Stripe, PayWay and Payfast pages are headed Payment. Every payment page, simulated or real, shows your organisation's logo, or its name if you have no logo.
Stripe
The page has a Stripe payment form built in, and a Pay button. One-off and recurring donations are both paid here.
If the payment is declined, the page reloads with the reason under the form. When Stripe gives no reason, it reads: "Your payment could not be completed. Please try another card."
PayWay
The page says: "You are about to be taken to ABA PayWay to complete your payment." and "You can pay with ABA PAY, KHQR or a card. We will bring you back here once you are done."
For a recurring donation, the page also tells the supporter that their gift is fixed with ABA at that exact amount, that ABA will never take more than it, and that to give a different amount later they will need to set up a new gift.
The supporter selects Continue to ABA PayWay. The page shows "Taking you to ABA PayWay…" and opens ABA's own payment page.
Limits:
- Recurring donations are monthly only. ABA can't hold a yearly recurring donation. A supporter giving in a currency routed to PayWay is not offered yearly recurring donations on the join form. One-off donations are not affected.
- Riel amounts must be whole riel, and more than 100 riel. This applies to the total charged, donation and tip together. Otherwise the page shows "This donation's amount cannot be taken by ABA PayWay. Please start again."
Payfast
The page says: "You are about to be taken to Payfast to complete your payment." and "You can pay with any of the methods Payfast offers this club. We will bring you back here once you are done."
For a recurring donation, the page also says: "To give regularly you will need to pay with a credit card, because that is the only method that can be stored for your future gifts. Other payment methods can only be used for a one-off gift."
The supporter selects Continue to Payfast, which opens Payfast's own payment page.
Limits, on the total charged (donation and tip together):
- South African rand only. Otherwise: "This donation is in" the donation's currency, "and Payfast takes South African rand only." For example, "This donation is in USD, and Payfast takes South African rand only."
- At least R5.00. Otherwise: "Payfast cannot take a payment of less than R5.00."
When either limit is hit, the page shows the message instead of the Continue to Payfast button.
Payment Simulation
A simulated donation opens the Payment Simulation page. It asks "How would you like to simulate this payment?" and says "This is a simulated payment: no real money moves and no card is charged."
There are two buttons:
- Successful payment: the donation is marked Succeeded, as if the supporter had really paid, and the supporter goes to the welcome page. The supporter's membership is updated exactly as after a real payment, so real emails can go out. For a supporter joining for the first time, your organisation's default "Supporter activated" workflow sends its emails, except in the cases listed in Referrals and how supporters join. If the supporter's membership was already active, "Supporter activated" sends nothing. "Subscription renewed" emails the supporter instead if they have paid before, unless their recurring donation was cancelled or PayWay or Payfast stopped taking its scheduled payments; in that case no default email is sent. No default email is sent either when the payment is made on an ambassador membership, such as an ambassador giving to their own club, however often they have paid. No default email is sent while its workflow is switched off for the club, or to an address Supporter Club has marked as undeliverable. Workflows and emails of your own set to the matching events run too. See Workflows and their steps.
- Failed payment: the supporter goes back to the ambassador's page. The donation is not marked as failed. It stays Pending, and becomes Abandoned later. See Donation statuses.
Use this page to try a club out before you publish it.
Supporters also see this page on a published club if a currency the club accepts is routed to a simulated provider, for example because no route of yours covers that currency and it falls through to the catch-all route. A club can't be published in that state, but it can get into it later if you change your routes.
Paying inside the join window
Beta
This feature is in beta and may not be available for your account yet.
This section applies to clubs set up so that supporters join in a window over the ambassador's page. See Creating a club.
The second step of the window is Confirm and pay: "Review your support below, then complete your secure payment." It shows:
- Supporting: the ambassador.
- Membership option: the option chosen, or "Custom amount".
- Frequency.
- Donation and Tip, only when the supporter added a tip.
- Total.
- "Only your donation is tax-deductible — any tip is not."
What comes next depends on the provider:
- Stripe: the card form is built in to the window. The supporter selects Pay now, is charged without leaving the page, and the window moves on to the welcome step. If the payment is declined, the error shows in the window, or "Your payment could not be completed. Please try another card." when Stripe gives no reason.
- Any other provider, including the simulated one: a Continue to payment link takes the supporter to that provider's payment page, described above. If they cancel at the payment service, or select Failed payment on the Payment Simulation page, they go back to the Confirm and pay step instead of the ambassador's page.
