Currencies and payment routes
Choose the currencies your organisation and each club accept, and route each currency to a payment provider.
Three settings decide where a donation's money goes:
- Your organisation's currencies: the currencies your clubs can accept.
- Each club's accepted currencies: the currencies supporters can give in to that club.
- Your organisation's payment routes: which payment provider takes a donation in each currency.
Routes belong to the organisation and are shared by every club. A club only chooses which currencies it accepts.
Your organisation's currencies
Select Settings in the sidebar, then the Payments tab. The Currencies panel shows:
- Enabled: the currencies your organisation accepts. "Enabled currencies determine which currencies are made available to payment routes."
- Default: your organisation's default currency. It is "used as the base currency for subscription options and currency conversions, and it also serves as the currency for reporting."
If no default has been set, the panel says so, for example "No default currency has been set, so USD is used as a fallback."
To change them:
- On the Currencies panel, select Edit.
- Tick the currencies to enable. The choices are AUD, EUR, GBP, HKD, KHR, PLN, SGD, USD and ZAR. "Leave none checked to enable all currencies."
- Choose the default currency.
- Select Save changes.
The default currency is required, and it must be one of the enabled currencies. Otherwise the panel shows an error, such as "Default currency must be an enabled currency", and nothing is saved.
A club's currencies
Open the club, select Settings, then the Payments tab. Two panels set the club's currencies.
Currency
The club's default currency. "Your club's default currency is used as the base currency for subscription options and currency conversions. It's also used for setting your funding goal and serves as the currency for club-level reporting."
- On the Currency panel, select Edit.
- Choose a currency, or (Organisation default) to use your organisation's default.
- Select Save changes.
The club's default currency must be one the club accepts. Otherwise the panel shows "Default currency must be an enabled currency" and nothing is saved.
Accepted currencies
The currencies supporters can give in to this club. "Supporters see a donation form in each one, with membership options converted from your club's default currency."
- On the Accepted currencies panel, select Edit.
- Tick the currencies to accept. You can only choose from your organisation's enabled currencies. "Leave none checked to accept every currency your organisation accepts."
- Select Save changes.
When none is ticked, the panel shows "Every currency your organisation accepts".
Payment routes
The Routes panel on Settings > Payments lists your routes. As it says: "Routes are checked from top to bottom. The first route that covers a donation's currency is used."
The table has these columns:
- ID: select it to edit the route.
- Currencies: the currencies the route covers, or All currencies.
- Provider: the payment provider that takes those donations.
How a donation finds its provider
When a supporter gives to a published club, Supporter Club takes the donation's currency and goes down the routes in order. The first route that covers the currency decides the provider.
A route set to All currencies covers every currency your organisation has enabled.
For example, with these routes:
- KHR, USD → PayWay
- All currencies → Stripe
- All other payments → Simulated Payment (the catch-all route, described below)
a donation in USD goes to PayWay, and a donation in GBP goes to Stripe. The catch-all route is never reached, because the second route covers every enabled currency.
Donations to a club that isn't published don't use your routes. They always go to a simulated provider. See How supporters pay.
Add a route
- On the Routes panel, select Add route.
- Under "Would you like this route to handle payments in all currencies or in specific currencies?", choose:
- All currencies, or
- Specific currencies, then tick the currencies. The list shows your organisation's enabled currencies.
- Choose the provider from the list that starts "Select a provider". Each provider is shown with its status, for example "Stripe (Ready)". Only enabled providers are listed. If you have only one enabled provider, it is already chosen.
- Select Add route.
If you choose Specific currencies, you must tick at least one. Otherwise you see "Currencies must include at least one currency when "Specific currencies" is chosen".
A new route is added at the bottom of your own routes, immediately above the catch-all route.
Change the order
Drag a route's row up or down in the Routes panel. The new order is saved when you drop it. The catch-all route can't be moved, and always stays last.
Edit or delete a route
- Select the route's ID.
- On Edit payment route, change the currencies or the provider.
- Select Save changes.
To delete the route, select Delete on the same screen and confirm "Are you sure you want to delete this payment route?".
The catch-all route
Every organisation has a built-in route at the bottom of the Routes panel. Its Currencies column reads "All other payments" and its Provider is your Simulated Payment provider. It covers every currency your organisation has enabled, so it catches any enabled currency no route above it covers. This page calls it the catch-all route.
You can't edit, move or delete the catch-all route. Its ID is not a link.
Why a currency can stop a club going live
A club can go live only when every currency it accepts reaches, through your routes, a provider whose status is Ready.
Because the catch-all route covers every currency your organisation has enabled, an enabled currency that none of your own routes covers reaches the Simulated Payment provider. That provider is never Ready, so the club can't go live. The same is true for a currency whose route points at a provider that is Awaiting Stripe, Blocked or Not connected.
A currency the club accepts but your organisation no longer has enabled reaches no route at all, not even the catch-all route. The club can't go live, and once it is live, donations in that currency fail. Before the club is live, test donations in that currency still work, because every donation to a club that isn't live is simulated.
Every screen of a club that isn't live shows "This club is not yet live." The reason it can't go live is given on the Make your club live step of the club's task list and on the Publish club screen:
- If another currency the club accepts reaches a route: "This club can't go live yet — some of the currencies it accepts have no payment route at all, so donations in those currencies would fail. Choose the currencies this club accepts."
- If none of the currencies it accepts reaches a route, and your organisation's payment connection is cleared: "This club can't go live yet — point one of this club's payment routes at your organisation's cleared payment connection before you publish."
- If none of them reaches a route and your payment connection isn't cleared, the message is about your payment connection instead. See Publishing, archiving and redirecting.
Once the club is live, its screens can show "This club is live, but some of the currencies it accepts have no payment route at all, so donations in those currencies are failing." If none of the currencies it accepts reaches a route and your organisation's payment connection is no longer cleared, they show "This club is live, but donations cannot currently be taken: your organisation's payment connection is no longer cleared to take real money." instead.
A route can't be added for a currency your organisation hasn't enabled: the route's currency list shows only enabled currencies. To fix it, do one of these:
- Enable the currency again under your organisation's Currencies. It then reaches the catch-all route, so also make sure one of your routes takes it to a Ready provider. See Add a route.
- Stop the club accepting it. The currency is still listed on the club's Accepted currencies panel, but not when you select Edit, because that list shows only your organisation's enabled currencies. Select Edit, tick the currencies the club should keep accepting, and select Save changes. The currency that is no longer enabled is dropped. If you tick none, the club accepts every currency your organisation accepts.
For a currency your organisation has enabled that doesn't reach a Ready provider, add a route for it to a Ready provider or change an existing route, or remove it from the club's Accepted currencies.
A club that is already live stays live if this stops being true, and shows an alert instead. See Publishing, archiving and redirecting.
The organisation task list has its own step for routes. See The organisation task list.
