Connecting Stripe

Connect a Stripe account to your organisation, finish Stripe's setup, and read the account's status.

Connecting a Stripe account lets your clubs take real card payments through Stripe. You connect it from Settings > Payments, then finish setting it up with Stripe. The account can take donations once Stripe has cleared it and its status reads Ready.

Connecting an account does not route any donations to it. After connecting, add a payment route for the currencies Stripe should take. See Currencies and routes.

Before you start

Supporter Club creates a new Stripe account from your organisation's details: its country, email address and website. Check them first on the Contact panel of Settings > Account. See Organisation settings.

Start connecting

  1. Select Settings in the sidebar, then the Payments tab.
  2. On the Providers panel, select Add provider.
  3. Select the Stripe card, then Continue.

The Connect a Stripe account screen opens. It has three steps.

Step 1: New or existing account

Under "How would you like to connect Stripe?", choose one:

  • Create a new Stripe Connect account: "We'll create a new Stripe account for your organisation." This is selected to start with.
  • Connect a Stripe account Supporter Club issued: "Use a Stripe account Supporter Club has already set up for your organisation."

Select Continue.

Step 2 for a new account: Account details

The Account details step shows the details your Stripe account will be created from: Country, Email address and Website. A detail you haven't set shows "Not set".

The step also says: "Your new Stripe account will be created as a non-profit."

  • If a detail is wrong, select Edit details. It opens Settings > Account, where you can correct it. Then come back to the provider.
  • If the details are right, select Continue. Supporter Club creates the Stripe account.

If the account can't be created, the step stays open with one of these messages:

  • "Stripe wouldn't accept your organisation's details, so we couldn't create your account. Check that your organisation's details are right, then try again."
  • "We couldn't reach Stripe. Please try again."

Step 2 for an existing account: Enter an account ID

Use this only for a Stripe account that Supporter Club has already set up for your organisation.

  1. In Stripe account ID, enter the account's ID. It starts with "acct_".
  2. Select Continue.

The account is refused, and the step stays open with your entry, if:

  • The ID isn't shaped like an account ID: "That does not look like a Stripe account ID. A Stripe account ID starts with "acct_", for example acct_1032D82eZvKYlo2C."
  • Supporter Club didn't issue the account: "Your Stripe Connect account appears to be associated with a different platform. You can only connect existing Stripe Connect accounts that were issued by Supporter Club." You'll see this for an account another platform manages, for an ID that doesn't exist, and for a Stripe account you set up yourself.
  • The account is already connected: "This Stripe account is already connected to a payment provider, so it cannot be connected again."
  • Stripe couldn't be reached: "We couldn't reach Stripe. Please try again."

Step 3: Connect

For a new account

The step says: "Your Stripe account is ready. Finish setting it up with Stripe now, or copy the link and come back to it whenever you're ready."

  • Select Continue with Stripe to finish setting up the account on Stripe's site. It opens in a new tab.
  • Or select Copy Link to copy the Stripe Link and use it later.

When you leave Stripe's setup, Stripe sends you back to the provider in Supporter Club. Supporter Club then checks the account with Stripe again:

  • If Stripe has cleared the account, you see the provider's screen, with the status Ready.
  • If Stripe is still waiting for something, you return to the Connect step, with a fresh link to carry on.

Stripe's setup links expire. If you follow an expired link, Supporter Club replaces it with a new one and sends you back to Stripe.

If the link can't be made, the step says "We couldn't reach Stripe. Please try again." Select Try again.

For an existing account

The step says: "Your Stripe account is connected and ready to use." Select Done to go back to the Payments tab.

The provider's status still depends on what Stripe says about the account. Check it in the Providers panel.

Leaving part-way

At the top of the screen:

  • Cancel, before an account has been created or connected, deletes the unfinished provider and returns to the Payments tab.
  • Close, once an account is held, leaves the provider as it is.

To carry on later, select the provider's ID in the Providers panel. You return to the step you left.

Check the account's status

A Stripe provider shows one of these statuses:

  • Not connected: you have started adding the provider, but no Stripe account is connected to it yet.
  • Awaiting Stripe: the account is connected, but Stripe has not yet cleared it to take both payments and transfers.
  • Ready: Stripe has cleared the account. It can take donations.
  • Blocked: Stripe has disabled the account.

Opening a provider that is Awaiting Stripe checks the account with Stripe again. If Stripe has cleared it, you see the provider's screen. If not, you go to the Connect step, where you can carry on with Stripe's setup. Supporter Club also updates the status when Stripe reports a change to the account.

If Stripe can't be reached when you open a link to Stripe, you return to the Payments tab with "We couldn't reach Stripe. Please try again."

If Stripe blocks the account

A blocked provider's screen shows a notice, "Stripe has disabled this account":

"Stripe has disabled this account. You'll need to resolve this with Stripe before it can take donations again."

Supporter Club does not hold the reason. You need to find it in Stripe. The notice has a link to Stripe:

  • Continue setting up with Stripe, if your account was created by Supporter Club and Stripe's setup was never finished. It takes you back into Stripe's setup.
  • Open your Stripe dashboard, otherwise. For an account created by Supporter Club, the link signs you straight in to your dashboard. A fresh link is made each time you select it.

A club can't go live while a currency it accepts is routed to a blocked provider. A club that is already live stays live and shows an alert. See Publishing, archiving and redirecting.

Remove a Stripe provider

A Stripe provider with a connected account can't be deleted. You can disable it instead, once it is not the default and no payment route uses it. See Payment providers.
